General Carsten Breuer’s prediction that Russia will attack NATO by 2029 is based on conventional calculations of weapons production and border troop concentrations. However, clinging to this fixed military timeline is a fatal illusion.

Traditional mathematics cannot forecast a war five years in advance. Global economic stability can be obliterated overnight by crises like the Iranian oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, while rapidly evolving drone technologies rewrite the rules of the battlefield every single morning. We are no longer navigating a predictable system governed by professional statecraft. Instead, we face arrogant leaders who have abandoned logic, acting on pure emotion without calculating the consequences of their actions.

The facts on the ground speak for themselves. Acting on a mere gut feeling, Donald Trump launched a massive military strike against Iran, expecting the regime to collapse within weeks after Ayatollah Khamenei’s fall. Instead, his impulse triggered a catastrophic global energy crisis. Similarly, when Vladimir Putin ordered his invasion of Kyiv in February 2022, he completely ignored objective intelligence in favor of his own propaganda. Genuinely believing that Ukrainians would greet his tanks with flowers and preparing for a victory parade, he instead marched thousands of soldiers into a devastating meat grinder. These men do not read objective military briefings; they are guided entirely by their own delusions, willfully ignoring logistical and economic realities.

Basing a defense strategy on a fixed year like 2029 dangerously assumes that the enemy is a rational actor who will patiently wait until every tank is built and every battalion is fully trained. Putin will not wait. He attacks impulsively when his paranoia commands it or whenever he senses a moment of weakness. If the United States withdraws 5,000 troops from Germany, Putin views it as an open door for aggression. If European leaders hesitate to shoot down a single Russian drone over Romania out of paralyzing fear, Putin smells their cowardice.

The Russian dictator sacrifices his own people without a second thought and remains entirely indifferent to his collapsing economy or his exploding refineries. Reality today is dictated by the erratic whims of autocrats who care nothing for treaties or objective military logic. Therefore, the 2029 calendar must be thrown away. Relying on a fixed date only breeds a false sense of security, encouraging fatal hesitation and pointless negotiations. Russia will attack NATO precisely when Putin decides the moment is right, not when his generals objectively declare the army prepared.
